We here at Photodex love a good excuse to celebrate! Not only that but we LOVE any excuse to showcase that celebration with an epic slideshow. So let’s celebrate cause it’s Cinco de Mayo.
So as some of you may already know, Photodex is HQ’d in the heart of beautiful, vibrant Austin, Texas. Austin is home to a great live music scene, amazingly delicious Tex-Mex, some of the best fresh lime Margarita libations and of course to a huge melting pot of culture. Especially since Austin used to actually be a part of Mexico. Texas settlers broke away from Mexican governance in 1836. The new capital was named for Stephen F. Austin, who is known as the Father of Texas (Fun Fact! Texas is the only state to have been a decade-long successful republic before it became a state.)
Cinco de Mayo (pronounced: [ˈsiŋko ðe ˈmaʝo]; Spanish for “Fifth of May“) is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Its significance goes beyond that in Mexico. But in the U.S. the date has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture. Often even mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day—the most important national holiday in Mexico—which is celebrated on September 16, commemorating Mexican independence from Spain.
So fire up the blender, enjoy some delicious tacos and celebrate in the rich culture of this special day with us!
