Trying to figure out what to get Dad for Father’s Day this year? Create something special and personalized that he’ll keep forever! A video slideshow is the perfect way to show-off cherished family memories and is sure to please the entire family. Take Dad on a trip down memory lane that he’ll never forget! Here are some tips to help you get started!
1. Gather your photos and video clips:
Chances are your content might be stored on multiple devices. An iPhone, your digital camera, an online photo sharing account like Flickr or SmugMug or even old family prints that need to be scanned. Think about what you want to include in your video slideshow and how you want to present it. Do you plan on telling a story? Maybe you want to highlight certain photos from years past? See our video inspiration gallery below for some great ideas!
If you have photos that need to be scanned in, there are several great, free apps that are available. One that we’ve used is the ShoeBox app. It can scan and digitize old photos in just a few minutes and is much easier than busting out the old scanner.
2. Import your photos into slideshow software:
You’ll want to choose a slideshow tool that’s easy to use and gives you the flexibility to output to multiple formats like DVD, sharing on the web or making a MPEG video. ProShow is an excellent tool for creating slideshows for any occasion and you can download a free trial if you don’t already own the software. ProShow comes in both desktop software for Windows or a handy and easy-to-use app for iPad and iPhone.
Once your photos are imported into your slideshow software, arrange them in the order you’d like them to appear. Do some cropping or color correction if need be. You may also want to trim your video clips down and just use a smaller section from a larger clip. ProShow has built-in a built-in video trimmer that lets you trim out any unwanted frames. You can also color correct and crop your photos!
3. Choose a Song for your Video:
Do you have a special song that has meaning for you and your family? Or maybe just a nice, instrumental background tune will do the trick? Whatever song you choose, you’ll be amazed at the emotion that can come from pairing moving photos and videos with a beautiful soundtrack.
4. Add captions and animated effects:
Introduce your video with a title slide that includes a personalized message. Then get those photos moving with animated effects. Pans, zooms and cool animated layouts can breath life into old photos and really make them come alive. Preview your video slideshow to see how the effects blend with the music you’ve added.
5. Decide how you’d like to output your video:
DVD for playing back in the living room? MPEG for playing back on a laptop or to project during a dinner or event? You may even want to output to YouTube or Facebook so friends and family from far away can enjoy the video slideshow you’ve put together.
