How to Create a Time Lapse Video with ProShow and More

Time lapse videos have become more and more popular over time. This is a very interesting technique built out of hundreds of images taken per second and certain intervals and then made into a short video clip. Once played it looks like time appears to be moving faster even though it’s being played at a normal speed.

Some great examples of a time lapse that you may have seen are cities at night, sun rising/setting, snow falling, a rain storm, the milky way, and many more.

We’ve listed a few quick steps on how to make your own time lapse video in ProShow and added some time lapse examples made in ProShow by some of our fans. Check it out below and get started today by trying something new.

Time Lapse Basics

  • Keep your camera still (preferably using a tripod), make sure your focus is set to manual and invest in a timer or device that will automatically capture images for you at a certain pace.
  • Capture a sequence of images over time, at least once per second will be sufficient for creating the time lapse look.
  • Gather your images and bring them into ProShow (in order). Set your slide times to 0 seconds and transition times to .05 seconds. Then hit play and preview your video.
  • ProShow will playback your photos in order at the rate at which you set the slide times. For a quicker playback, shorten your transition times. For a slower playback, lengthen your transition times.
  • Output your finished slideshow as a video file to use in a larger project or simply upload it to Vimeo, YouTube, Facebook, or anywhere else to share online.

Learn How to Set Up Your Photo Intervals

Calculating the number of shots to create your time lapse can be tricky. So we gathered a few how-to articles on time lapse that include how to easily calculate your photos. Sometimes depending on the camera you’re using it can be easy because the camera will automatically calculate the output time, but others won’t.
