Creating an Image with a Transparent Background in Photoshop

In yesterday’s post we showed you how to create a cool effect using text as an image in ProShow. A few of you had questions about how to create a transparent .png image in Photoshop. This is easy to do and once you know how you’ll be able to create tons of cool transparent image files to use in your ProShow slideshows.

Below are the steps, so follow along!

  1. Open Photoshop and create a new file. The most important part of this step is to make sure you have the background contents set to ‘Transparent’. This will leave the background of your image transparent.

  2. You’ll now have an empty background layer. Now click the ‘T’ button on your toolbar to type in your text.

  3. Once you’ve entered in your text, you should see your text on top of a gray and white checked background. That indicates that the background behind your text is transparent. So anything you place underneath will show through. Think of it like this, your text layer when applied over any other image or video will show up as a stamp.

  4. Last step is to save your image. Go to File> Save As> and select .png as your file type. PNG files preserve the transparency in your files. Programs like ProShow that know how to read transparency will only show the text portion of the image and the checkered section will appear see through or transparent.

That’s it! You now know how to create an image with a transparent background in Photoshop.
